Certified Family Law Specialist, State Bar of California, and Board of Legal Specialization

No two families are exactly alike. Over the years, the ”traditional” households have become less common. The idea that parents in a family consist of a husband and wife no longer holds true. In the United States in 2019, there were almost 300,000 families with children who had parents of the same sex. A census from September 2020 found that 18 million households in the United States are single-parent households. Along with those types of families, there are also children who live with legal guardians, children who live with grandparents, and many other types of families that stray from what is considered “traditional”.

Our team at Hoffer Family Law Firm has had the pleasure of working with many different types of families throughout our work as a divorce and family law firm. We have seen firsthand how unique each family can be and how the choices made in each household impacts every person in the home. As we move away from this “traditional” or “nuclear” mindset we can see more clearly that no family unit is the same, and see how each family faces their own set of challenges.

This year we are honored to announce our Unique Family Scholarship. We want to hear from students who grew up in unique, non-traditional households. Who raised you? Whether this was a single parent, same-sex parents, a legal guardian, or childhood friend’s family, we want to hear your story. How did growing up in your particular family unit shape your personal definition of family? ? How has your family impacted your life and made you who you are today? We are looking for students to explore the impacts of their upbringing and provide a perspective that may be unknown to others.

The scholarship winner will be chosen based on the criteria outlined below and will be awarded with $1,000 to go towards their higher education.
